Overview

The longest and most untamed stage of the Shepherd's Trail — 22 kilometres through terrain that belongs, for most of the year, to no one but the mountain itself. It is a grand crossing from the Vjosa valley towards the high plateau of the Kolonja (Ersekë town) region, with the mighty Gramoz appearing en route. At around 8 hours of walking, this stage is a full day in the wilderness, one that gradually strips away every trace of the settled world. The only signs of human presence are the shepherd's huts scattered across the grazing land, occupied briefly each summer when the flocks come up from the valleys below.

Trail description

Setting off from Delvinë, follow the dirt roads out of the village. Take a short detour to the right to refill your water at the village spring before beginning a steady, continuous ascent. Just before the two-hour mark, the dirt track gives way to a traditional paved stone path. As you begin your descent, the majestic Nemërçka range comes into view on your right, framing the horizon like a crown.

Leaving views of Nemërçka behind, turn left and walk through a big meadow in an area named Gropat e Mehmetit (“Mehmet plateau”). Heading northeast, the landscape shifts as rolling slopes, lightly sprinkled with alpine fir trees, begin to come into view. At the wide trail's end, take in your first panoramic views over Mount Gramoz and the Kolonja Region before entering a cool, shaded forest path.

Pass by the old military ruins and follow the descending forest road, which offers wide vistas of Leskovik and the Pindus Mountains. Continue downhill before starting a steady, sustained ascent toward Shëndelli Peak. After passing the peak, cross high up through Murrizit Pass. Continue along dirt tracks lined with fir trees until you reach the expansive Meadows of Igra, where large herds of cattle frequently graze. Leaving the meadows behind, the trail begins a rugged, rocky descent that leads you all the way down to the Poda River. As a final challenge and the true cherry on top, a steep uphill climb on a wide smooth road takes you to the heart of Sanjollas village.
